Chapter 23: Pledge
"In three days," Woo-jin said to the door, "is not a thing a man announces to a monastery before he asks the other man."
"Oh, I've been waiting for him to ask for a month," Yoo-chan said. "He's slow. It's the beads."
"Go away, Yoo-chan."
"The dumplings are on the step. Congratulations!"
His footsteps went away down the gallery, singing about a pig.
Mu-yeol put his forehead on Woo-jin's shoulder and shook.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"I didn't ask you."
"No," Woo-jin said. "You didn't."
He lifted Mu-yeol's chin with a finger.
Mu-yeol's face was a mess, with ink on his cheekbone and his eyes very tender.
He looked younger than Woo-jin had ever seen him.
"Ask me," Woo-jin said.
"Woo-jin." Mu-yeol's voice caught. "I killed you once. I'm still angry about what you did. And I want to spend every day I have left with you."
"Will you marry me?"
"You have a great many faults," Woo-jin said. "Vanity. Lies of omission. The way you go quiet when you're upset."
"I know."
"Yes," Woo-jin said.
He did not even stop to think.
It was the easiest word he had ever said.
The Hall of the Crimson Lotus held its weddings in the open air, in a courtyard of red maples, at noon.
Three days later the maples had turned from rust to blood-red, and the whole Hall stood in rows to watch.
Jun-seo had ridden over with Woo-jin's master.
The master wore his formal grey and an expression of grim, careful dignity.
He sat in the front row beside the old abbot's empty chair, with a bowl of dumplings on his knee that Jun-seo had put there.
Yoo-chan stood at the front, a ladle in his belt, wearing the one clean robe he owned and crying openly.
Mu-yeol waited at the far end of the aisle in black, with the robe closed to the collar.
