Liyan sat down on the stone beside the pool and took a cup.

The wine was thin and a little sour.

"Ask," he said.

Mingjue sat on the other side of the stone, hands on his knees.

Without the horns he looked younger, and more human, and much less sure of himself.

"Tomorrow I will be a man who ages," he said. "I would like to know what the man wants before he exists."

"I wish to ask what you want, Liyan. Not for the village. Not for me. For the rest of your life."

Liyan opened his mouth to say *nothing, I'm fine*.

He closed it again, because Mingjue was looking at him with that grave pale face, waiting, and it deserved a true answer.

"I want to keep the school," he said slowly.

"I want Ayu to finish her lessons and go wherever she likes. She's much cleverer than I am."

"I want to sit the provincial exam a third time, just to see. Not to pass. Just to find out what I'd write now."

"I want a garden. I've never had a garden."

"And I want you at the table every morning, wearing that ugly gray robe, burning the rice."

Mingjue's mouth twitched.
