Chapter 21: The Last Scale

The scale rang on the stone, and the whole Hall of Waves went quiet.

Mingjue looked down at it.

Then he looked at his own hands, turning them over slowly in the lantern light.

The last dull silver along his forearms was fading.

It did not fall.

It simply went, from the wrists up, and left plain skin behind.

"Oh," he said.

He swayed.

Liyan caught him under the arms before his knees could go.

"I am warm," the dragon said, to no one. "Liyan. I am so warm. And my heart. Listen to it."

"I can hear it."

"And I am..." His face took on a look of the utmost astonishment. "I am extremely hungry."

Bo, at the back, burst into tears.

"I'll fetch everything," the old carp sobbed. "Everything in the kitchen. Do not move."

The court left with great tact, in a long ripple of fins and shells.

The Inspector paused at the door, tipped her round hat, and said, "Congratulations. Mind the first night. It is always loud," and went out.

Liyan got him down the passage to the east wing with an arm around his waist.

Mingjue leaned on him heavily and kept stopping to look at things.

"The floor is cold on my feet," he said. "Not like stone. Like a floor."
