Chapter 22: The Morning After the River
Mingjue was sitting on the edge of the lotus pool with his feet in the water and a blanket over his shoulders, looking furious.
"I have a cold," he said.
"I can hear that."
"I have never had a cold. It is horrible. My head is full of wet wool."
"You were out in the night air at the banquet with wet hair," Liyan said, and sat down beside him. "It happens."
"I want breakfast. Bo says it is not ready."
"It's not ready, Majesty," said Bo, from the kitchen door, without a trace of apology. "The rice takes the time the rice takes."
"Do not call me Majesty."
"I'll call you what I like. I've served you six hundred years."
"I shall call you Master Ao. I shall call you late for breakfast."
"And you will eat what you are given."
Mingjue sneezed.
It was a tremendous sneeze that rattled the lotus leaves.
He glared at the pool.
"I cannot make the water rise," he said, more quietly. "I tried this morning. I stood on the stair and said *rise*, and nothing happened."
