Chapter 7: The Rehearsal

We were gone before Marlene came back with the tart.

In the car, I pressed my palms against my knees.

"Call your lawyer now," I said. "Not at eight."

"He's asleep in Chicago, and he starts on Michigan probate offices at eight tomorrow," Laurence said. "If your mother had an attorney, he's on a file somewhere."

"My father will bury it before he finds it."

"Then we find it first."

I looked at the dark road.

"You don't have to do this. The contract says a marriage, a year, and a divorce. It doesn't say my mother's will."

"It doesn't say a lot of things."

On Friday afternoon, the wedding rehearsal took place in the club's garden.

The officiant was a small woman with silver hair who had married half of Cedar Landing.

She stood at the arch with a clipboard and looked at me over her glasses.

"Seven years ago I had you on this lawn," she said.

"I know."

"You were late then too."

"I wasn't late. I left an hour before it started."

She blinked.

Then she looked down at her clipboard and her mouth moved.

"Right. Places."

My father stood at the back with his arms crossed and did not come forward.

Brett leaned on a chair near the roses, with Shelby beside him.

He had come to watch.

I did not know why Laurence had let him.

"They'll wonder if you aren't here," Laurence had said that morning. "I want them to see how little it bothers us."

Now Laurence stood at the arch in a pale gray suit with his hands folded.

I walked up the grass toward him in my ordinary shoes.

My father had refused to walk me, so the officiant's assistant did it, a boy of nineteen who held my elbow with two fingers.
