Chapter 12: Three Days
On the first morning Brunhild tried to get up at six, and Yui sat on her.
"I have a report to write," Brunhild said from under her.
"You have a fever."
"I do not have a fever."
"You do, officially. I told Greta to tell everyone." Yui bounced once on the blanket. "Lie there."
"You weigh nothing."
"I weigh enough."
Brunhild's mouth twitched, and she lay back on the pillow and glared at the ceiling.
It was the loudest surrender Yui had ever heard.
The rules of the sickroom were simple, and Yui wrote them on a card and pinned the card to the door.
No reports.
No visitors except Greta.
No sitting up, no pacing and no sword.
Hot soup three times a day, and a nap in the afternoon with the shutters closed.
"A nap," Brunhild said, reading it with deep suspicion. "I am twenty-nine years old."
"Then you'll be good at it."
Greta delivered the soup herself, with a white face and a very straight back.
On the second morning she whispered, "The Marshal wants to know why the saint isn't at the infirmary."
"What did you say?"
"That you caught the camp fever off a man from the west wall." Greta stirred the pot. "He sent the Court Mage to look in on you."
"And?"
"I told the Court Mage the Lady is contagious, and that if he opens the door he can have the Commander's cough." She grinned. "He went away very fast."
Yui hugged her, soup spoon and all.
At night she washed Brunhild's skin with warm water and the beeswax salve, and then she lay beside her, and neither of them moved.
