Chapter 15: The Credit

I looked at the photo for a long time.

The sunset was very good.

My great-grandmother's lace was blowing a little in the sea wind.

"You're being calm," Shauna said. "I can see you being calm. Stop it."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Comment. Tag us. Call the Newbury Street place and tell them they're thieves. Call the Globe."

"And say what? That woman stole my fiancé and now she's stealing my credit?"

"Yes. Exactly that. In capitals."

I put the sleeve down on the table.

"Then I'm the girl who won't take a hint," I said. "Chasing her across the internet. With a baby. Over a dress she paid forty-two thousand dollars for."

"I hate when you're right," Shauna said. "It's like being slapped with a pillow."

I didn't comment.

I set the second sleeve and went home at three.

On Sunday morning Gran shook me awake on her couch.

She was holding her phone out at arm's length.

"Who's this man," she said, "and why is my granddaughter on his computer?"

It was the parish photographer from Trinity.

He'd posted eleven pictures from the bride's room.

My hands on the row of buttons.

Madeline's face in the mirror, looking down at me.

Me, five months pregnant, with a pin in my mouth.

Under them he'd written a few lines.

Since some people are asking, this gown was made by hand by Lauren Furlong of Furlong's Bridal on Tremont Street.

I watched her button every one of the thirty.

Credit where it's due.

It had been shared four thousand times.

The Newbury Street salon quietly took Madeline's tag off its page.

Madeline's post disappeared an hour after that.

The phone in the shop didn't stop ringing from opening until close.

Shauna answered it in a headset.
