Chapter 23: The Promise
The chamber went quiet the way the shop had gone quiet in May.
Two hundred brides turned in their seats to look at me.
My daughter was still wailing against my chest.
I put my hand over her back and bounced her, the way Gran had taught me.
She didn't stop.
She had her opinions.
"Ma'am," the chair said. "The vote has been taken. This item is closed."
"Then put it on the record anyway," Madeline's mother said. "Since everyone else got to."
She kept her eyes on me.
"My daughter lost her husband in that river. Evan Thorncroft stood at his grave and promised my husband he would take care of her. And this woman knew it. She knew it, and she got herself pregnant anyway."
Somebody behind me said, "Oh, come on."
Gran's hand closed on my wrist.
I stood up.
Before I could open my mouth, Evan was already on his feet at the end of the fourth row.
"That's not what happened," he said.
He didn't ask the chair.
