Chapter 20: Rehearsal Dinner
Corina's POV
The rehearsal dinner was held in the courtyard of the riverside hall, under strings of white lights, with forty guests at one long table.
Brynn sat at the center in a green dress, with Trenton on her right.
She had not said a word about the recording.
She had cut his steak for him, and she laughed at everything he said.
He laughed back.
He did it perfectly, and every time he did, I could see how much it cost him.
Elliot sat on my left with his hand flat on my knee under the tablecloth.
Margo sat across from us beside Trenton's mother, introduced to the table as a cousin.
She caught my eye and tapped her pearls twice.
That meant the lectern's sound box was open, unlocked and waiting.
I breathed out.
Brynn tapped her glass with a spoon.
"Everyone, one more tradition before dessert." She turned her head to me and her smile widened. "My maid of honor, Corina, has agreed to say a few words."
Heads turned.
I had not agreed to anything.
"Brynn," Trenton said quietly.
"Honey, she wants to." Brynn looked down the table. "Corina's been so brave. Haven't you, Corina?"
I stood up with my glass in my good hand.
Elliot's palm slid off my knee, and I felt the loss of it.
"To the bride," I said.
"Hear, hear," said somebody.
"Who has wanted this groom since sophomore year."
A small pause went down the table.
"Sophomore year?" said an aunt.
"Who is the best storyteller I have ever known." I kept my voice warm. "She can tell you a whole afternoon, down to what everyone wore, and leave out the one thing she did."
