Chapter 23: After the Vows
Trenton held the microphone in both hands, and the lawn went so quiet that I heard the river.
"Twenty-three days ago I picked up a marriage license with Corina VanDusen," he said. "Ten minutes later I told her I'd slept with the woman standing beside me."
A murmur went down the rows.
"I made a bet over a phone. Then I pushed her out of my car in the rain and told her to go think about what she'd done."
"Trenton," Brynn said.
"I locked her in a room in my house." His voice shook. "She climbed out of a skylight and stepped off my roof, and I stood at the window and watched her do it."
Someone in the back began to cry.
"I believed a lie for ten years. I did every bit of it because I wanted to hurt her." He looked at the bride. "Nobody made me. That's mine."
Brynn's face had gone gray.
"Honey, please. She tricked you. They all did."
"I'm not marrying you."
"Trenton..."
"You never had my name, and you never will." He set the microphone back in its stand. "Please leave my mother's hall."
Brynn stared at him.
Then she stared at the rows of chairs, where two hundred people she had cooked for and flattered looked back at her.
She picked up her train and walked down the aisle alone.
Nobody spoke to her.
An aunt moved her handbag out of the way.
Halfway down, a cousin stood up, deliberately, and turned her back.
At the last row Brynn's heel caught in the carpet, and her veil tore from her hair and hung in the grass.
Dean was standing there.
