Chapter 5: Terms
Brynn left with her heels clicking and her head high.
I lay there with her whisper in my ear.
I thought she meant Dean.
I thought she meant the way she had gutted my first marriage, and that she was gloating about it, to see if I still flinched.
I didn't flinch.
I was too tired, and too interested in something else.
"Elliot," I said.
He looked up from the chair.
"Tomorrow, I want to see Trenton."
His eyebrows rose a quarter inch.
"Alone?"
"No. You in the doorway. Ten minutes."
"I can do that."
"I don't want you to talk to him," I said. "I want a witness."
He said, "Then I'll stand very still."
Trenton came in at noon the next day with two coffees and a bag of bakery rolls.
He set them on the tray table.
He had not shaved.
There were gray hollows under his eyes, and for a moment, God help me, I almost pitied him.
Then he said, "Don't ever do that again."
"Do what?"
"You know what." His voice cracked on it. "You scared me. Do you know how scared I was?"
"Scared," I said, "because I'd have ruined your wedding?"
His jaw shifted.
"The wedding is still on," Trenton said.
I waited.
"Twenty-two days. The hall is booked, the guests are coming, the cake is ordered. Brynn will be in the dress and you'll be standing next to her."
He leaned closer and smiled, softly.
"You'll carry the rings."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because of the house." He said it flatly. "Your hundred and eighty thousand is in the down payment, and the deed has my name on it. It's mine, Corina. You signed it over when you were happy."
