Chapter 15: Connor Comes North
Connor got out of the Audi with a bouquet of grocery-store roses in one hand and his phone in the other.
He had slept in his clothes, and I was glad.
"Stay inside," I told Tobias.
"Lena."
"I mean it. This one is mine."
He stayed at the kitchen window with his hands flat on the counter.
I walked out onto the lawn in my boots and my mother's old parka.
The snow was coming down in slow, fat flakes.
Across the street, a neighbor with a shovel had stopped shoveling.
"Len." Connor's face crumpled the second he saw me. "Thank God. I drove all night."
"It's two hours from Minneapolis."
"I drove around first. I was so scared." He held out the roses. "I was out of my mind last night. I said terrible things. Tobias had been lying to you for years and I lost my temper."
"He told me the truth."
"Did he tell you he picked me?" Connor took a step closer. "He chose me to be there for you, because he trusted me. I did the work, Lena. Three years of work."
"You did the parts I could see."
"What does that mean?"
"I want my nine thousand dollars."
He blinked.
"What?"
"March of last year. Your credit card, when the agency docked your commission. I paid it off, and you said you'd pay me back by summer."
"Lena, now? You want to talk money now?"
"You came to my mother's house to talk about us. Money is the only part of us that's left."
He glanced at the shoveling neighbor.
His voice dropped, soft and wounded.
"You're hurting me."
"I know what it looks like when you're hurt. It looks like this."
"I love you."
"You love being the man I thank."
