Chapter 20: Saturday Morning
Pierce's phone rang at five on Saturday morning, and he answered it on the dock in the dark.
I was standing next to him with a thermos of coffee.
Caleb had his arm around my shoulders, and my father's legal pad was folded inside my jacket, against my ribs.
My father was still in the hospital.
The doctor had said he couldn't leave.
Then she had looked at his face and agreed to let a nurse bring him to the ball.
"Dad?" Pierce said.
He listened.
His shoulders came down an inch.
"The east pier. Third piling from the end."
"Thank you."
He hung up.
"She had him row it out Thursday night," he said.
"He tied a line around the Underwood and dropped it in thirty feet of water."
"Why would he tell you?" Caleb asked.
"Because he's finished lying."
Pierce's voice went rough.
"He says it's the only thing he's done in three years that he doesn't have to be ashamed of."
Caleb squeezed my shoulder.
"I've got a diver," he said. "Ask the old rigger."
The old rigger had a nephew who dove for scallops off Stonington.
