Chapter 23: The Fall
The crack of that slap went around the hall.
Norris didn't lift his hand to his cheek.
He stood with the red mark rising on his face and looked at his stepmother.
"That's the last time, Cornelia," he said.
His voice was gentle.
"I should have said it years ago."
Cornelia's hand was still in the air.
She seemed to notice it, and she lowered it, very slowly, to her side.
Two hundred people stared at her.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody clapped, either.
It was the sound of a whole town deciding something at once.
Pierce stepped onto the stage.
He had the sealed folder from the safe under his arm, the one I had watched Caleb set aside in the study.
"I'd like to read something," he said. "It's short."
Cornelia turned on him.
"Pierce. Sit down."
"I'm not a child anymore, Grandmother."
He opened the folder and took out the last will of Caleb's father.
The paper was thick and cream, and the print was small.
He cleared his throat.
"He wrote this eight years before he died. Nobody read it after the funeral, because Grandmother said it was only the usual."
