Chapter 7: The Show

He kissed me, afraid I might hit him.

His hand came up to my jaw, careful, and his mouth touched mine once, very lightly.

I'd meant it to be a show.

I had planned the angle, the moonlight, the way my back would face the door.

I had not planned the way my knees would simply stop working.

I got my fingers into the front of his jacket to stay upright, and he made a low sound that I felt more than I heard.

For a second, I forgot there was anyone else on that dock.

Behind us, Hattie slid the phone out of my coat pocket without a word.

I felt her do it, a light tug, and heard a soft thump as it landed back between the life vests.

The door creaked.

Teddy's whistle stopped.

I kept my eyes shut and let Nash hold me, and I heard a long, appreciative breath from the doorway.

Then Teddy's footsteps went across the boards, the clink of a phone being picked up, and the door closing.

Nash lifted his head.

We were both breathing hard.

"He's gone," he said.

"I know."

"You can let go of my jacket."

I looked down.

I had a fistful of leather in each hand.

I let go and smoothed it flat, which was a mistake, because it put my palms on his chest.

"That was convincing," I said, in a voice that did not sound like mine.

"Thanks." He cleared his throat. "That was the plan."

Neither of us moved for another second.

Behind us, Hattie coughed.

"I'm still here," she said. "I'm a witness. I'm going to need compensation."
