Chapter 24: The Silver Wolf
"I don't want to be your Warden," Cormick said.
I went still against his arm.
"You took my kneeling, and it freed me, and I'm yours for as long as I live. That's done. That's not a thing I'm asking about."
"Then what are you asking?"
He sat up, and the quilt slid to his waist.
He looked at his hands.
"Be my mate," he said. "Not because the moon says. Because you want to."
I stared at him.
"There's no bond between us that wasn't made by an oath," he said. "There's a thread, and I felt it light, and I told you in the dark that I love you. I won't have it be the Stone or the silver that answers for me. So I want to do it properly. In front of them, at the Altar, at the next full moon. You say yes to me, or you say no, and either way it's you who chooses."
"You've thought about this."
"For sixteen days with a hole in my chest."
"What if I say no?"
"Then I'll stand beside you for the rest of my life anyway," he said, "and ask again every year."
I laughed, and then I was kissing him.
"Yes," I said against his mouth.
"You haven't heard the rest."
"I don't need the rest. Yes."
He closed his eyes and held me hard.
I felt his heart under my cheek, steady and slow, and for once it wasn't counting.
A month later the moon came up full over Cedar Fork, and the clearing was packed.
Two hundred and thirty wolves stood in the ring, and some of them had come up from the town to see.
The Beta stood at the head of the circle in the Alpha's grey coat, which he had never liked and wore anyway.
Hattie sat on a folding chair at the front, with a thermos on her knee and her braid over one shoulder.
Beside her sat Alder.
He was thin, but his color had come back, and his wolf had not.
