Chapter 18: Stood Down

I came down the stairs in Cody's T-shirt with the phone held out in front of me.

He was at the stove, flipping an egg, still singing.

He saw my face and turned the burner off.

He read it twice, the second time with his glasses on.

"He went first," Cody said.

"He went first."

The chief called at eight.

He didn't say hello.

"You're stood down," he said. "Pending review. No assignments, no training sessions, no league buildings except for the interview. I'm sorry, Raynor."

"I didn't do it."

"What I think isn't evidence."

At six that evening Courtney Mallon went on the air with a special report.

She'd given it a title.

"The Housekeeper Fix."

Cody and I watched it on his couch with the sound low.

There was my face from the steakhouse clip, hair falling down, mouth open.

There was Dex taking his yellow in minute nine, slowed down, with a red circle around me in a still from the gala.

"Sources say the referee and ex-wife kept detailed files on every official in the league," Courtney said into the camera, very serious. "Files on which referees book early. And when."
