Chapter 32: Christmas in Pueblo
"Bring everybody," my dad had said.
So on Christmas morning, everybody was in Cody's truck.
Junie had spent Christmas Eve at her mom's.
Her mom dropped her at our curb at seven with a hug and a bag of cookies for the road.
Robin sat in the back with Junie, the cookies and a bag of presents the size of a person.
Cody sang the whole way down I-25.
Junie had stopped telling him to stop.
Now she just held up her stopwatch and timed how long he could hold the wrong note.
"Ten seconds," she said outside Castle Rock. "That's a record."
"I've been practicing," Cody said.
"Don't," said Robin and Junie and I, all at once.
My dad's house had a wreath on the door and the lawn chair under a foot of snow.
He was on the step before we'd stopped.
He hugged me.
Then he hugged Junie, who'd started calling him Grandpa without correcting herself in October.
Then he looked at Robin, who was carrying the giant bag.
"You must be the loud one."
