Chapter 17: In Front of Everyone

Bryce ran.

He went for the dock at a dead sprint, his good shoes sliding on the wet grass.

"Bryce!" my mother screamed.

I'd never heard her scream.

I went after him.

Five years of the prison yard had made me faster than I used to be. Five years of my father's bourbon had made him slower.

He hit the dock boards with me twenty feet behind.

The boathouse flashed past. The kayaks. The bench.

At the end of the dock, my father's boat bumped against the pilings. Thirty feet of white fiberglass with Keene Development painted on the side.

Bryce jumped down into it and went straight for the wheel.

He was fumbling at his pocket for the key when I stepped down onto the deck behind him.

He spun around.

He had the key in his fist with the point sticking out between his fingers.

"Get off my boat."

"It's Dad's boat."

"Get off it!"

He swung at me.

I'd seen worse swings in the chow line.

I caught his arm, turned him, and put him face down across the cushions of the stern seat with his wrist folded up behind his back.

Not a punch.

I'd thought about this for five years, lying on a top bunk. What I'd do with my hands if I ever got to him.
