Chapter 28: Astoria
"You're leaving," Lucas said.
It wasn't an accusation.
It was a man reading a weather report he'd been expecting.
"I'm going to Astoria," I said. "I never gave up the apartment. I kept paying the rent. In case."
"In case of me."
"In case of everything."
He came in and sat on the end of the bed.
He didn't touch the duffel.
"Tell me why," he said. "I'll take whatever it is. I just want to hear it."
I sat down next to him.
"I married you to save a house I don't even like," I said. "In a dress my mother bought for Kitty. With my father walking me up the aisle like a check. Everybody in that church thought I'd been sold."
"I didn't."
"I know you didn't. But I was." I looked at my hands. "If I stay tonight, I'll never know if I stayed because I wanted to or because nobody ever told me I could leave."
He was quiet a long time.
"I want you to choose me from somewhere nobody sold you," he said slowly.
"Yes."
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"I told you. If you go, I carry your boxes." He stood up and picked up the duffel. "This is one box. I'm disappointed. I'd prepared to carry more."
