He wrote it on the typewriter.
Not the blue one.
The police had that, and the twin, and twenty ribbons in evidence bags.
He bought an old black Olympia at a shop on Bleecker Street and sat at his desk every night in May, typing.
He threw away nineteen drafts.
I know because I fished them out of the basket.
I'd moved halfway back by then.
A toothbrush in the penthouse. A drawer. My grilled cheese pan on his stove three nights a week.
My lease in Astoria still had six months on it.
Neither of us said anything about that.

The sentencing was on a Tuesday in June, in a courtroom downtown with wood paneling and bad air conditioning.
Marge sat on my left in her rumpled blazer, with a coffee she'd smuggled past the metal detector.
Gran sat on Lucas's right in pearls and, for once, no fleece vest.
"It's a courtroom," she said. "One dresses."
The press filled the back rows.
My squad filled the row behind us, in plainclothes, which fooled nobody.
