On Saturday night the arena was dressed for Halloween.
Half the students wore cat ears and capes, and Lenny wore a paper crown that said Beaker King.
Ansel sat in the first row again, in Torin's hat, with a cocoa that had gone cold in his hand.
Torin had told him that morning, in a voice with no give at all, that he would not touch Dane tonight.
The panel had taken the video from Friday.
The coach had said one more fight and the season was over.
Torin had said, "Understood," and meant it.
Now Ansel watched him skate out for the first period, number nineteen, with his gloves on and his jaw clenched.
Dane skated out beside him with the C on his chest.
He bumped Torin's shoulder on the way past, lightly.
Torin did not turn his head.
"He's going to try something," Lenny said.
"Every shift."
It started in the first period.
Dane found Torin at every face-off.
