Chapter 10: The Moon Garden
The moon garden was empty at midnight, and the two moons hung low over it, one silver and one pale gold.
Mai had never been in it before.
Hinata dragged her there by the hand, barefoot in her white under-robe, without a lantern.
The path wound between pale flowers that only opened at night.
At the end of it, behind a screen of silver willows, stood a small stone gate.
It was a copy of the Dawn Gate, two grey pillars as tall as a man.
It had been built for a Saint to pray at when she could not go to the Gate House.
"Odile told me about it," Hinata whispered. "Nobody comes here after dark."
"Why are we here?"
"Because Leon said someone is trying to take our book."
Hinata turned, flushed and fierce in the moonlight.
"And I don't want to think about paper. I want to think about you."
She pushed Mai back against one of the pillars.
The stone was cool through Mai's thin dress, and rough at her shoulder blades.
Hinata kissed her, hard, with her hands flat on Mai's chest.
It was the first kiss in the shed all over again, only desperate.
"Hinata, anyone could..."
"Nobody will. And if they do, they can watch." Hinata's mouth moved to her throat. "You're not going to stop me."
Mai didn't.
Hinata bit down gently on her collarbone, then sucked the mark, then soothed it with her tongue.
Her fingers worked at the buttons of Mai's dress and pulled it open to the waist.
The night air hit her bare skin, and her nipples went tight.
"Cold?" Hinata murmured.
"Not anymore."
"Good."
Hinata took each nipple in her mouth in turn, until Mai's head rolled back against the stone and her knees shook.
One of Hinata's hands slid down Mai's belly and under the open dress.
She found the damp cotton of Mai's underwear and pressed her palm flat against it.
"You're soaked already," Hinata whispered. "Out here, with the whole garden watching."
"The garden isn't watching."
"Isn't it? Look at the moons."
Mai looked up, and the two moons stared down at them over the willow, one silver, one gold.
Her face went hot, and her hips pushed forward into Hinata's palm without permission.
"Greedy," Hinata said, delighted. "Good. Be greedy for me."
Mai's hands found Hinata's shoulders, and she pushed, gently.
"What?" Hinata looked up.
"Let me."
"Mai..."
"You've done everything for me." Mai slid down the pillar, slowly, until her knees met the cool grass. "Let me do this one."
She gathered the hem of the white under-robe in both hands and pushed it up Hinata's thighs.
Hinata wore nothing under it.
Moonlight lay across the soft chestnut curls and the pale skin of her belly.
"Oh," Hinata said, faintly. "You planned this."
"I'm a pharmacist. I plan."
Mai pushed one of Hinata's feet up onto the stone base of the pillar.
Hinata's knee was bent and she was open, with her back pressed to the pillar behind her.
