Chapter 21: Four Hundred Witnesses
"Good evening," I said into the microphone.
"My name is Maya Ferris, and I did the flowers."
Somebody laughed nervously.
Judith's hand closed on my elbow.
"Give that back," she said, pleasantly, through her teeth.
"Let go, Mrs. Hartwell," I said. "Four hundred people can hear us."
She let go.
I held up the two halves of the check, the strips of tape shining under the chandelier.
"Four weeks ago, in this lobby, the chair of this company handed me a check for seventy-five thousand dollars.
She told me to invent a family emergency and go home.
I tore it in half in front of her staff.
Somebody who works here picked up the pieces and taped them together, because they didn't think I should have to carry it alone."
I turned the check toward the crowd.
"Here is the memo line.
It's in Mrs. Hartwell's handwriting.
It says 'Settlement for silence.'"
I read it again, slowly, so the back row could hear.
"Settlement for silence."
A sound moved through the ballroom.
"Three weeks ago, at dawn, she told her son she had known about our marriage for five years," I said.
