Chapter 13: Mouse
I said my own name out loud on the floor of the ambulance bay.
"Mom?" Connor said behind me.
The Board went away, and the bay came back, with its concrete and its blood and the dead crab under Calvin's knee.
"I'm fine," I said. "Help me up."
Connor's legs were shaking as badly as mine, so Calvin lifted us both.
I waited until Connor was asleep in the staff lounge before I said anything else.
At the nurses' station I told Gloria and Calvin what I'd seen in the white pavilion.
Gloria listened with a peppermint in her cheek.
"Your name," he said, when I was done.
"My whole name. Over a green, right where a band would go."
"Somebody else named Shannon Kilbane?"
"There's one of me in Baltimore. I looked in the phone book in 1998."
Gloria took her glasses off and let them hang on their chain.
"The woman on the promenade," she said. "Navy scrubs. You told me about her Wednesday."
"Glasses pushed up in her hair."
"Nest," Gloria said, and counted on her fingers. "Walk-ins wait. The sick wait."
