Chapter 16: The Green

Calvin stopped Medic 19 on Pratt Street at 4:30 in the morning, a foot from the line.

"I'm coming with you," he said.

"You're staying with the truck. If I don't come back out, somebody has to tell Gloria."

"Kilbane."

"Somebody has to tell Gloria, Calvin."

I got out and walked up to the strip of white light on the asphalt.

I'd sent forty-one reds and a pregnant woman through my body since Thursday, and I didn't know what color I was anymore.

I stepped over it.

The line hummed under my sneaker, warm as a dryer, and let me through.

The Green smelled like coffee and wet harbor.

People slept in hotel lobbies and on the café chairs along the water, under blankets with the hotel names on them.

Nobody in there was bleeding.

I'd forgotten what a room looked like when nobody was bleeding.

The white pavilion stood on the promenade where it had stood on Wednesday.

Its sides were rolled up, and there was a line of people inside it, waiting.

At the far end, behind a long folding table, sat a woman in navy scrubs.
