Chapter 7: Jarrett Matches It
"What did she tell you?" Rafe said.
The glass door had barely shut behind Delphine.
"That you look up every time I walk into a room."
"It's a habit."
"For how long?"
The kitchen floor creaked under the housekeeper.
Rafe looked toward the sound and lowered his voice.
"After the donor dinner tonight, when we're out of this house. I'll tell you everything. I promise."
"Everything?"
"Everything I can say out loud."
I let it go, because he meant it.
I could see that he meant it, and I could see what it cost him.
The Holloway Group donor dinner was held in the ballroom of the Holloway Grand, where I had cut a cake earlier that week.
Three hundred people in black tie sat at round tables, and every one of them looked at us when we came in.
I wore a green dress with a low back and a pair of flat shoes, because my ankle was still taped.
Rafe kept his hand on the small of my back the whole way to the table.
He had put me at the end, with nothing over my head.
Jarrett stood up from the head table with a champagne flute and tapped it with a fork.
"Friends," he said. "A toast to the newlyweds."
The room went quiet.
"Rafe has run this company for eight years. He has never once taken a day off, never once brought a date to a fundraiser, and I'll admit some of us worried."
A few people laughed.
"Then Justine came along and stood on a chair, and I have never been so happy to see a chair used."
