Chapter 9: The Cut Cable

Justine's POV

The Mercy General charity fair was held in the hospital's car park, under a white tent and a row of stage lights.

Nobody in the world was happier to see me than the night nurses.

"There she is," Winnie said, in scrubs and a hospital badge, with a paper cup of cider in each hand. "The woman who made a billionaire pay for a pharmacy cabinet."

"Two hundred sixty thousand, plus tax."

"I'm so proud I could throw up. Where's your husband?"

"Behind me."

Rafe was three steps back, holding a bag of fair tickets and scanning every guy-wire on the tent.

Winnie looked at him.

"He's counting the poles," she said.

"He does that."

"Does he know he does it?"

"Yes."

"Good. I was worried he was the normal kind."

It was the first Saturday of our marriage, and he had let me out of the penthouse because the fair was in a public car park, with security at every post.

I'd told him it was my hospital and my friends and that he could stop worrying for five minutes.

He had said he'd try.

The stage was at the far end of the tent.

A lighting rig hung over it on two steel trusses, with eight big lamps pointed at the lectern where Jarrett would present the cheque.

He had insisted on doing it himself.

At four o'clock he took the microphone and told three hundred people how thrilled he was.

Rafe and I stood at the edge of the stage with the hospital's chief of pharmacy.
