They married in the castle chapel on the first warm day of spring.
The snow had gone from the courtyard, the gorge roared with melt, and the door of every room in Kaldmoor stood open to the air.
Her father walked her up the aisle in his best coat, patting her hand the whole way.
"I told you not to read for nobles," he whispered.
"I read for one."
"You married him."
"It was a very thorough reading, Papa."
He gave a strangled laugh and blew his nose.
Isaure stood at the front in a blue gown, crying openly and furious about it.
Marguerite stood beside her in grey, without a hood.
The old reader sat in the front pew with her shawl pulled round her shoulders, looking as if she had arranged the entire matter herself.
The grey knight guarded the door with her spear, and she winked at the bride.
Bastien waited at the altar in dark blue.
He had cut his hair, and his face was shaved, and his hands were not quite steady.
He took her ink-stained fingers in his three-fingered ones.
When the priest asked whether he would hold her, he said, "I will," in the loud flat voice of a man giving an order.
When the priest asked her, she said, "Every dawn," and the chapel roared.
At the feast she drank only tea from her grandmother's cup, and no one remarked on it.
