Chapter 29: Mireille

Mireille was sitting on the top step of Lise's porch in a camel coat, with her knees together and a paper bag beside her.

Her mother's car was parked by the causeway, packed to the roof.

Etienne pulled up and turned off the truck.

"Want me to come?"

"No," I said. "Stay here and look big."

"I can do that."

I walked up to the porch.

Mireille stood.

No gum.

No lipstick.

Her blond hair was pulled back plain, and she looked tired, and she looked about her age.

"Merry Christmas, baby," she said.

Then she winced.

"Josette. Sorry. It's a habit."

"Merry Christmas."

She held out the paper bag.

I looked inside.

My bathrobe.

The blue one with the coffee stain on the pocket, washed and folded.

"I took it off the hook in the company house the morning he threw me out," she said. "I don't know why. I think I wanted something of yours."

I didn't know what to say to that.

So I didn't say anything.

"I'm leaving," she said. "I got a job in Dallas. Marketing for a frozen food company. Pizza rolls." She almost smiled. "They didn't call my references."

"When?"

"Today. I wanted to be gone before anybody on this island woke up and started talking." She looked down the causeway. "I signed Etienne's papers. I'm not asking for anything. Not his shares, not the camp, not a dollar. Tell him."

"He's right there."

She looked at the truck.

Etienne lifted two fingers off the wheel.

She lifted two back, and her mouth shook.

"I'm sorry about the seed," she said quickly. "I'm sorry I picked the pink. I'm sorry I put it in your vault, in your handwriting jars, and let you carry it up a hill in a hurricane. That was the worst thing I've ever done, and I did it smiling."

"Yes," I said. "You did."
