Chapter 20: Knives
Nobody in the Hall breathed for a long moment.
Then the elder Hu clapped his ringed hands together, once.
"Take the Regent," he said. "Take the cook. Bring His Majesty gently to his uncle."
Soldiers began to climb the steps of the dais.
Linyuan held the Emperor's good hand in his own, with the Regent's seal against his ribs.
He did the only thing he could think of.
He kicked over the brazier.
The black vinegar went across the dais in a steaming sheet, and coals rolled out after it.
The first soldier up the steps got a face full of it and screamed.
"It is sixty paces to the Kitchen gate," the Regent said at his shoulder, quite calm.
He held a sword.
Linyuan did not know where he had taken it from.
The Regent stood in front of the throne with a Hu soldier's blade in his hand and his cap knocked crooked.
"That's not a way out," Linyuan said.
"No. It is an observation."
Another man came up the steps, and the Regent opened him from shoulder to hip.
Linyuan had seen him fight once, in a bath hall.
