Chapter 7: Her Table

I was in the cookhall at five the next morning, because nobody had told me not to be.

Torin walked three steps behind me, as agreed, and carried the flour sacks without being asked.

The line cooks stopped talking when we came in.

An old man at the pass slid a pan of biscuits toward me and muttered, "Luna," not looking up.

That was the whole sermon, and it was enough to get me through the morning.

By seven the long tables were full.

A hundred wolves ate eggs and watched me over their forks.

Sable was not on the line.

Somebody said she was resting, with a look that meant they knew why.

The Council's envoy came in at half past seven in her grey coat and took a seat at table four, by the window, with a plate of toast and her notebook.

I put a pot of coffee in front of her myself.

"Miss Buchanan," she said. "Good coffee."

"Thank you, ma'am. May I ask you something in front of everyone?"

She looked at the hall, and the hall looked back.

"You may."

"Edda Whittaker's cabin is where I'm staying until the hearing," I said. "Last night, a man told me it stands on Rawlings land, at the Alpha's pleasure. He said the pleasure might change."

A fork clattered somewhere.

"Does your ruling, that my house and my standing aren't to be touched, cover the roof I'm sleeping under?"

The envoy set down her toast.

"It covers anywhere the promised Luna lays her head, until the Council speaks." She raised her voice just slightly. "And anyone sheltering her. Any wolf who turns a woman out of her bed during a hearing answers to the Council. I want that understood."
