Chapter 10: Salmon
I did not tell Niko I was going.
I told him I would ask my uncle myself.
He said, "Then ask," and nothing else, and that was how I knew he meant it.
Teuvo lived in a shingled house on a rise above Gig Harbor, with a view of the water and a dock he had never put a boat on.
I had slept in the room at the top of the stairs for seventeen years.
He opened the door before I knocked.
"Lena, honey," he said.
He took my face in both hands and kissed my forehead.
He smelled of woodsmoke and Old Spice.
I stood on the mat and let him, and I thought, this man taught me to tie a bowline.
I thought, this man sat up with me when I had the flu.
"I've got a salmon in the oven," Teuvo said.
"Come in out of the wet."
He had set the table for two, with a cloth and a candle and a bottle of white wine.
I put the survey case on the hall table, where I always put it.
I sat in the chair with my back to the kitchen wall, a hand's breadth of gap left behind it.
He served me from the same dish he served himself.
