Chapter 10: Keeping Score

Demi did not even step back.

She turned her shoulder, let Dean's fist go past her ear, and took his wrist in both hands.

A half turn, and his feet left the ground.

He hit the grass flat on his back for the second time in a week.

The drip bag flew off its pole and burst on the grass.

Demi pinned his good arm under her knee and held it there.

The whole meadow watched.

"You are sick," Dean gasped, red-faced, looking up at her. "You wrecked her. You wrecked all of us."

"I showed a video," Demi said.

"She is your sister!"

"You had me for six years, Dean," she said, very low. "You were eleven when they took me. The whole county searched for me, and nobody ever asked why the search stopped."

His eyes flickered.

For one moment, something moved behind them.

Then he turned his head away.

Demi stood up, let him go, and wiped her palms on her trousers.

A medic knelt beside him.

Behind her, her mother was screaming Celia's name, and her father was shouting at Quinton, and Quinton was shouting into a phone.

Demi walked away through the middle of it.

Drake Rafferty was waiting at the generator tent at the edge of the meadow.

He held the flap open for her without a word.

Inside, a cot stood against one wall, a first aid kit lay open on a crate, and a lamp hung from the pole.

The noise of the meadow dropped away as the canvas fell closed.

Demi sat on the cot.

Her palms were still raw from the paracord, and the blisters had split.

Drake knelt in front of her and took her hands.
