Chapter 24: Live

Demi stood.

She did not go to the lectern.

"Yes, Your Honor," she said. "I have one thing."

The room waited.

"For twenty years, I was told nobody was coming," she said. "That was a lie, and it was a lie I was fed a spoonful at a time. I would like the record to say it was a lie."

"It will say so."

"Thank you."

She sat.

That was all.

The judge looked at her for a long moment and nodded, as if it had been a speech.

Then she put her glasses back on.

"On the count of kidnapping, thirty years," she said. "On the count of unlawful imprisonment, to run consecutively, ten. On the count of attempted sale of a person, ten more."

The old woman's shoulders sagged.

"On the count of conspiracy, the court imposes no further time. Fifty years in all."

The bailiff touched the old woman's elbow.

She went out through the side door without looking back.

The courtroom exhaled.

Behind Demi, Bruce put a hand over his mouth.

Across the aisle, her mother wept openly, and her father stared straight ahead.

Neither of them spoke to her on the way out.

Six weeks later, the lights went up in the big studio on the sixth floor of the building with her name on it.

It had been the Pellham boardroom, with a long mahogany table and a dead plant in the corner.

Now it held a stage, a couch, three cameras and a hundred and twenty chairs.
