The helicopter set down in the meadow at noon, and a hundred people turned to watch the Pellham parents climb out.

The base camp had been rebuilt overnight into a stage.

A white tent covered a long table, and behind it a wall of screens glowed with the live viewer count.

Twenty-three million.

Quinton followed his parents off the helicopter in a fresh suit, with a tablet under his arm and a hard smile on his face.

He found Demi at the edge of the crowd and gave her a look that promised her something later.

Her mother did not look at Demi at all.

She walked straight to Celia and wrapped her in both arms.

"My baby," she said. "My poor, brave baby. What have they put you through?"

Celia sobbed on her shoulder.

"I just wanted to see you, Mom."

Her father stood beside them, large and gray, and finally let his eyes slide to Demi.

They stopped there, flat and cold.

"You," he said. "Come here."

Demi walked over.

She did not hurry.

"We have watched what you have done on this program," her father said, loud enough for the nearest cameras. "You hurt your brothers, you humiliate your sister, and you shame this family in front of the entire country."

"I defended myself."

"Do not talk back."

"I am answering you."

Her mother turned from Celia with her face tight with rage.

"How could I have given birth to something like you?" she said. "I carried you for nine months. I cried for you for twenty years. This is what comes home."

The crowd murmured.

Demi said nothing.

Her mother raised her hand and swung.

Demi caught her wrist in midair.
