Chapter 11: The Photo
Eleanor didn't scream, and she didn't throw anything.
She picked up her phone, found Beau's number and put it on speaker.
He answered on the second ring.
"Eleanor. Good morning."
"You sent my tutor a photograph."
"I sent a concerned friend a photograph." He sounded pleased. "I assume you've seen it. I'd hate for it to reach the Dean, or the Richmond Times-Dispatch, or the ladies at your garden club."
"You're threatening to humiliate me."
"I'm saying a widow your age shouldn't be photographed with a graduate student she pays." He paused. "Sign the release, and nobody ever sees it. Don't sign, and I'm afraid that girl's career is over."
I stood very still in the kitchen with the housekeeper's eggs going cold.
I watched Eleanor look at me.
She mouthed my name and raised one eyebrow.
I thought about my parents, and the body shop, and my scholarship.
Then I thought about Marion's yellow pad, and a number that said sixteen point eight million.
I shook my head.
Eleanor nodded.
"Beau," she said into the phone.
"Yes?"
"Publish it."
There was a stunned little silence.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Send it to the Dean. Send it to the paper. Send it to my garden club, I'll bring the cake." Her voice was perfectly calm. "I am a forty-one-year-old woman and a widow. The person in that picture is a twenty-two-year-old woman who has never taken a dollar from me for anything but mathematics. There is nothing in it that I am ashamed of."
