Chapter 18: The Trustees' Meeting
The deputy served the order at dawn and then, to my surprise, folded it in half and put it in his pocket.
"It says a hearing in Burlington in three weeks," he said. "It says nothing about the next ten days. The board meets on Wednesday, and I'm going to be there."
On Wednesday the great hall at Marrow Hill was full.
Twelve trustees sat at the long oak table in their good coats, and every girl in the school stood in rows against the walls.
The old man with the white moustache sat at the head.
My aunt sat at his right hand in a navy suit and pearls, with a lawyer at her elbow and a doctor in a grey three-piece suit behind her chair.
She had brought a leather folder, and she laid it on the table very gently.
She did not look at me.
I stood at the foot of the table in my school uniform with the stitched eyebrow, and Eamon stood behind me.
He had come in his good flannel and said he would stay out of it.
The cough girl was in the front row, holding her notebook.
"We are here," the old chairman said, "to settle a question about a ward of this school."
"A question I wish had never been asked," Odile said.
Her voice shook, very slightly, and a few trustees leaned forward.
"My niece Willa died at twelve years old of pneumonia, here, in Vermont. I buried her. I paid the school every month for seven years because I believed this girl was a child in their care, and it turns out the principal lied to me about everything."
She turned her head.
