Chapter 18: The Physician's Letters

The deepest cell of the Ministry of Justice smelled of wet stone and old straw.

Gao Shun held the lantern, and the light fell on the Imperial Physician huddled in the corner with his knees drawn up.

His green robe was torn.

His beard had come out of its comb, and his soft clean hands were black with the floor.

"You came," he said, and lifted his head. "I did not think he would let you."

"He did not," said Su Ming. "I told him I was going. He told me to take a cloak."

He sat on the stool the guard had left, with his own cloak around his shoulders and his kettle on his knee.

His voice had not come back fully, and his hands still shook when he was tired.

He folded them in his lap where the old man could not see.

"You have asked for me," he said. "Say it quickly. The Emperor has not forgotten that you handed him poison for nine years."

"He has not forgotten, and he will not forgive," said the Imperial Physician. "I know. I am not asking for it."

"What are you asking for?" said Su Ming.

"My granddaughter," said the old man. His voice cracked. "She is twelve. She lives in Wuyuan with her mother."

"If I am executed for this, they will say the family of a poisoner is a poisoner's family."

"What do you have?" said Su Ming.
