Chapter 21: First Snow
The howl went around the lake like a rope being pulled tight.
Niko eased out of me at last, slowly, and the knot let go.
We lay for a moment on the pelt, breathing.
"They're calling us," he said. "It's the first snow."
"All of them?"
"Every wolf in Iron Lake who isn't asleep. It's the oldest custom we have."
I sat up with the pelt around my shoulders and looked at the window.
White flakes, thick and slow, drifting down past the porch light.
"I haven't run with the pack since I was nineteen," I said.
"You'll run with me."
We went out onto the porch naked.
The cold hit my skin and I didn't feel it.
My wolf was awake under my ribs, pacing.
She had been awake for a week, and she wanted the snow.
Niko stood at the top of the steps, enormous and bare in the falling white, steam rising off his shoulders.
"Ready?"
I answered by letting go.
The change came easily this time, a bright sliding pull in my bones.
My hands dropped to the boards, and my back rounded, and my hair thickened into a coat of heavy lead-grey fur.
The world went sharp.
I smelled the lake and the pine and the cold.
