Chapter 24: The Mirror
The towel was still on the bathroom floor where I had dropped it, and the mirror above the sink was bare.
Niko stood in the doorway and looked at the glass.
He did not flinch from it.
"Tell me," he said.
"Sit."
I put the low stone stool in front of the sink, and he sat, and I turned on every light in the room.
I stood behind him with my hands on his bare shoulders and looked at the two of us in the glass.
A man on a stool, with a woman standing at his back.
"Close your eyes," I said. "No. Keep them open. Look at the mirror, and listen."
He looked.
His eyes slid over the reflection.
"Your head is shaved," I said. "It's tanned, and there's a pale line over the left ear where the clippers stop."
His shoulders loosened under my palms.
"You have thick dark brows that meet when you're thinking. They're meeting now."
"I'm thinking."
"Your nose was broken once and it healed a little to the left. I like it."
"I don't remember breaking it."
"Eleven years old, off a dock, you told me. You said that Ilmari cried."
His mouth twitched.
I watched it twitch in the mirror.
"You have lines at the corners of your eyes. Four on the left, three on the right."
"They go deep when you laugh, and deeper when you're trying not to."
"I'm trying not to."
"Your eyes are the blue of the lake ice in March, just before it goes."
"Cedar."
"Your beard is thick and dark, and there are three grey hairs in it, here."
