Chapter 17: The Garage Camera
The police came to Elliott's door at seven the next morning.
I was in his kitchen in his flannel shirt, making toast, when the bell rang twice and a fist hit the wood.
Elliott came down the stairs buttoning his jeans.
Two uniformed officers stood on the porch, one older and one young.
"Elliott Thackeray?" the older one said. "We got a report of controlled drugs being sold out of this property."
"By whom?"
"I can't say. Do you mind if we look in the garage?"
I saw Elliott's hands close at his sides.
He had spent eight years on the ambulance carrying pills and needles into other people's homes. One bag in the wrong place would end his teaching job.
"Go ahead," he said. "Please. Look anywhere you like."
The younger officer went through the side door of the garage with a flashlight.
I stood on the porch with my arms wrapped around myself, and Elliott stood next to me, very straight.
"And you are?" the older officer asked me.
"Rose," I said. "A friend."
"My girlfriend," Elliott said.
It was the first time he'd said it to anyone.
I could have kissed him, and I could have been sick.
From inside the garage came the sound of a lid being lifted.
"Sir?" the younger officer called. "I've got something here."
We walked over.
On the shelf above the workbench, behind a can of deck stain, sat a clear plastic bag.
It held about forty white pills, and a folded paper with a scrawled list of names and amounts.
Elliott looked at it for a long time.
"That isn't mine," he said.
"It's not yours?"
"I've never seen it. I was a paramedic. If I wanted pills, I'd have a lot better places to hide them."
