Chapter 19: The Song Costs Nothing

The god-spear stood in Saren's side to the haft, and where the iron touched him the scales had gone grey.

Ellory ran across the shingle with the dome of light still flickering over his head.

He fell to his knees in the willows.

"Saren. Saren, look at me."

The great head turned.

One vermilion eye opened, dim and glazed. It found him, and the long jaw trembled.

"Boy," Saren whispered. "You are making a great deal of noise."

"Don't talk."

"I am trying to die with dignity."

"You're not dying," Ellory said fiercely. "Hold still."

The god shrank down into a man as he lay, the scales running together.

Soon he was stretched on the moss in the willow shade with the black iron through his ribs.

Ellory gripped the shaft with both hands.

It was cold. The cold ran up his arms and into his chest, and he felt his own song falter.

"It will take you with it," Saren said, through his teeth. "That is what it is made for. Let go."

"No."

"Ellory."

"Say my name again and I'll slap you," Ellory said, and pulled.
