Chapter 20: The Stepsister's Price
Vigdis stopped at the foot of the dais.
She did not kneel.
I think she had worked out that kneeling had stopped being useful.
"I have been listening from the back," she said.
Her voice was small, and clear, and not sweet.
"My mother is going to say that I knew nothing. She has said it all my life, about everything. It is not true."
"What do you know?" the eldest Alpha asked.
"Everything she told me."
She held up the folded paper.
"This is a copy of the page cut from my stepfather's ledger."
"She wrote it out in her own hand and gave it to me, in case she failed."
"I did use it. My sister laughed in my face, and I knew then what I had become."
A hiss went round the benches.
"That was the first thing I did that I am ashamed of," Vigdis said. "It was not the first thing I did."
She turned her head and looked at me.
"I took Brage at the betrothal because Mother told me to, and because I wanted what you had."
"I knew he was yours. I knew you did not love him, and that it did not matter."
