Chapter 10: What Vivienne Cast

Once a month the pair's second had to cast the witness light, and in November it was Vivienne's turn.

Harry sat at the table with his hand on his wand and watched her come into the Boundary Gallery with her scarf still half wound and a book under her arm.

She was talking before she was through the door.

"I've practised in the bath, so if it comes out wet, that's why," said Vivienne. "Where do I stand? Do I wave? Is it a wave?"

"You hold it up to the cradle," said Draconia, "and you say the word, and you keep your mind on nothing at all."

"Nothing at all. Right. I'm very good at nothing."

"You are not," said Draconia, with fondness.

Vivienne stood at the end of the table and lifted her short dark wand to the crossed ones.

She said the word.

The light that came out of her wand was grey.

It was thin and low and slightly sour, a colour Harry had never seen in the gallery.

It crept up the wall and went out in places.

Vivienne laughed.

"Is it supposed to do that? It looks tired. I'm not tired. I slept nine hours."

She was still smiling.

The grey light slid down the wall, and a patch of it turned dark.

Harry saw Draconia's face change.

It did not soften, which would have been easy to read, and it did not tighten.

It went perfectly still, and then she got up and walked round the table to stand next to her friend.
