Chapter 6: The Open Grave

Roderick's wolves closed in on us, forty of them, with their hands on their blades.

Dorian had eleven Stormreach wolves in that hall, and all of them were on their feet.

"Roderick," Dorian said calmly. "You signed a treaty yesterday. This is a violation of it."

"She is my mate," Roderick said. "A mate belongs in her Alpha's house."

"I belong nowhere," I said.

I said it quietly, and it reached every corner.

Roderick turned his head.

"Elowen. Come to me."

"No."

"Come here, or I will have you carried."

I felt the First Wycliffe stir in the dark of my chest, wide awake, listening.

Not yet, I told it.

It settled, and I could feel it grinning.

A boot struck the floor.

Verity Crane had come down from the dais in her white dress, and she walked straight through the middle of Roderick's wolves.

Nobody stopped her.

She went to the iron bar on the last door, put both hands on it and lifted it clear.

The bar rang on the stone.

"Verity!" Roderick shouted.

"An Alpha who bars the door on his own mate does not get to mark me," Verity said, without turning. "I fought a year for this pack, Alpha. I did not fight to lock its own people in a cellar."

She threw the door open.

Cold mountain air poured into the hall.

"Go," she said to me.

I looked at her for a moment.

She did not look back.

Dorian's hand closed around my wrist, and I let him pull me through the door.

We were running before the shouting began.

We went up the ridge path under a thin, early moon, with Dorian's wolves behind us, until the lodge lights dropped away and the trees closed in.

When Roderick's horns stopped, Dorian slowed.

"They won't follow past the border stones tonight," he said. "Not with the treaty fresh. He would have to explain it to his own pack."
