Chapter 16: Statement
The Task Force office was on the sixth floor of a building with no sign, and it smelled of burned coffee and carpet glue.
It was five in the morning, and the deputy was already waiting.
He was fifty, thin, gray at the temples, with a legal pad squared exactly to the edge of the table.
Jack stood outside the glass wall of the interview room with his arms folded.
He had not said a word to me in the elevator.
"Ms. Pinkett," the deputy said. "For the record, the Director is recused from your statement. He is a witness and an interested party."
"I understand."
"You are also an interested party. I want that on tape before you say anything else."
"Then put it on tape."
He pressed a button on a black recorder and read the date and time.
"You are not under arrest. You are free to leave and free to ask for counsel. Do you want counsel?"
"No."
"You should."
"I've had a lawyer's script for fourteen months," I said. "I would like to say it in my own words."
