Mireille's POV
"Security," Lorna sobbed again. "Please. He's going to hurt me."
Nobody moved.
Six hundred people stood in their evening clothes.
They looked at a woman screaming for rescue from a man who held a microphone and nothing else.
Mr. Ackerly rose from table one.
"Sit down, Lorna," he said, quite gently.
She stared at him.
"Mr. Ackerly, he's..."
"Sit down."
She sat.
He walked to the foot of the stage, leaning on his cane.
Jasper crouched, picked the last page off the stage floor, and handed it down.
It was a certified copy from the county clerk, stamped and signed.
Mr. Ackerly put on his reading glasses.
"MacAvoy, Jasper. Standish, Lorna," he read, in a flat board-room voice.
"Married six years ago in Kings County. Status of record: active."
He lowered the page.
"Active," he said again, to the silent room. "Which means that on September twentieth, my son stood on my roof and married a woman who already had a husband."
A woman gasped.
Someone near the back said, "That's a felony."
"It is," Mr. Ackerly said. "Bigamy is a crime in this state, and my family put it on the internet."
Preston surged to his feet.
"Dad, it was a ceremony," he said. "It was never legal. It was for show."
"Say that again," I said.
Jasper had passed the microphone back to me, and the room heard every word.
Preston turned to me, white to the mouth.
"It was for show," he repeated.
