Mireille's POV

The bridge was closed for forty minutes on a Sunday in April, and this time the permit had my name on it.

I filed it myself.

I stood at the Brooklyn end in a plain ivory dress I had bought off a rack with my own money.

The sun was warm on my bare arms.

Twelve folding chairs stood in two rows on the pedestrian walk.

Every chair held someone I had picked.

Greta sat in the front row in a red suit, crying already and swearing at herself for it.

Four of my ER nurses sat behind her, still in their night-shift sweatshirts, passing a thermos.

The limousine driver was there with his daughter, who had graduated nursing school in December and wore a pin on her collar.

The marina owner sat at the end with his hat in his lap.

He had come to the shop in February and said his wife had changed her mind.

Four of Jasper's dock neighbors filled the last chairs.

Tobias stood to one side in a gray suit.

He had rented a studio in Queens in December and worked the counter at a hardware store.

He had not once asked me for anything.

He caught my eye and lifted two fingers from his side.

I lifted two back.

At the very back, alone, in a dark coat, stood my father.

I had written to him in March.

I had said he could come as a guest, if he stood in the last row and kept his phone in his pocket.
