Chapter 12: The Cedar Chest

Willa's POV

Killian told me at the harbor park on Saturday morning, while the kids were at the swings.

He told me quietly, with his hands on his knees, and he did not need the receipt in front of him.

"Three things on one calendar," he said. "That's all I have."

"No," I said.

"I'm not saying what it means."

"You're saying exactly what it means."

"I'm saying you should look at them."

I stood up so fast the bench rocked.

"She buried my father two winters before that wedding. That money was sitting in a bank. You heard her friend say it, she'd saved and scraped for years."

"Willa."

"She held my hand for nineteen hours. She slept in a hospital chair for six weeks. She has never taken one day off from my children."

"I know."

"You don't know her! You've known her for two weeks!"

"I know that she lied to me in April," he said. "And she told you the courier came in the afternoon."

"She misremembered."

"Maybe."

"It was five years ago."

"Maybe," he said again. "She hasn't asked me one question about that money, either. Not who cashed it. Not why."

"Because she doesn't care about money!"

"Maybe," he said, a third time, and he didn't push.

That made it worse.

I watched Poppy on the swing with her braids flying and my mother's voice in my head, saying *I'd hate to see you hurt twice.*

"You promised you wouldn't show her the receipt," I said.
